prove their strength and as adults they are ready become tough warriors, that’s a great honor for them and
their family. If they get the highest position, they will get highest level in their society. Also in this event, these

raids to other villages for increasing their strength by killing the other, as was a reason which were formerly a
necessary part of establishing and maintaining their own village, until they were stopped by Dutch colonial
intervention in the first third of this century.

Jam Gadang
Jam Gadang is a clock tower (literally "Massive Clock") built in 1827 during the Dutch colonial era, as a gift
from the Queen to city's controller. It was designed by architects Yazin and Sutan Gigi Ameh. It is the
landmark of the city, Bukittinggi at West Sumatra Island. It’s in the center of city and close to the main market
place, Pasar Atas.
The clock's diameter is 80 centimeters, the base's dimension is 13 meters in length and 4 meters wide, and
it stands 26 meters tall. Its located approx 900 meters above sea level, hence its air is fresh and cool
especially in the morning. One unique feature of the clock is that it uses the IIII for the number 4 instead of its
traditional Roman Number IV.
